Page Analysis #5
This is a contents page found from a Vibe magazine. Straight
away, Keri Hilson, a well-known and recognisable artist immediately stands out.
The bold colours of black, red and gold make a striking contrast to the pale background,
making her a very prominent and attention grabbing aspect on the page. Her pose
is dynamic yet relaxed portraying Keri’s comfortable and accustomed position in
the music industry. The angles created by this pose and the use of the cane as
a prop; allows Keri to take command of the page and constructs an overall
appearance that is more interesting and appealing to the eye, it encourages the
reader to look further into the magazine.
When photographing my model I will have to consider what angles will work with my model to make a dynamic and effective picture for my contents page. The costume used will have to be picked carefully to appeal to both male and females in order to attract a broader community to the magazine. If necessary props can be used to further intensify the images edgy and interesting appearance.

Looking at the layout of the page it is evident that the
artist and the text are both situated to their own sides of the page. Keri is
positioned slightly over the centre of the page, displaying her dominance and
authoritative on the page. Although
neither overlaps another which creates uniformity on the page and allows the
reader to look at the elements on the page separately.
Although I think this contents page is effective, when creating my magazine I would like to make my elements overlap and interact with one another, this I hope will bring the magazine together, giving it a professional and sleek look.

The plain background allows the designer to use multiple
colours within the text due to the way they won’t be at risk of blending in
with any colours behind them. The use of these bright and vibrant colours
alongside varying symbols creates a way of navigation, in which the readers can
locate different categories within the magazine.
I will certainly use hints of colour as a use of navigation around the page for the reader, I don’t think I will make use of the variety of colours that Vibe has in this case, although I will use accents which will be delicate yet effective.

The designer has used bold and black serif fonts on the
contents titles, this is also a use of navigation for the reader but it also
differentiates the different texts on the page so the reader can distinguish
the titles from the descriptions. The same reasons apply to the basis of why
sans-serif fonts were used for the description, in addition to the fact that
these types of fonts are simple and clear to read.
I have chosen to make use of both serif and sans-serif fonts, with the sans-serif fonts being used on more detailed and descriptive pieces of information, with the intention that the readers will be able to look at the text and can read and understand it without any effort.
