Music Magazine Analysis: Double Page Spread #5

Double Page Spread Analysis #5
On this double page spread featuring Birdman, the image fills the entire spread yet birdman is situated filling the left hand side of the page. I think this is effective as it provides an area on the right for the text to be placed where it can be read easily in a contrasting white colour. Birdman’s slouched position suggests his effortlessness supposedly sitting at the top of hip hop.
I like the positioning of Birdman on this double page spread, other than showing he’s comfortable being the ‘Boss of all bosses’ it shows his attitude toward music and the way he doesn’t feel the need to do anything extravagant to be successful or recognisable.

The colour scheme of black white and green is effective, as the only ‘bright’ colour is green, which is often considered to represent money in the hip hop industry. This I think is suitable for a double page spread featuring Birdman, as well as being a common topic in his music; it relates to the fact that he is a co-founder of Cash Money Records and formed the crew Young Money, expanding on his success in the industry.
I like the way this spread has used colours to relate to aspects of the artists music career, it fits in with that and his style which is something I intend to do for my magazine as well.

The title just stating his name shows that he is so successful that he doesn’t need a catchy slogan in order to attract the attention of readers. I particularly like the phrase ‘Boss of all bosses’ used in the introduction to the article, it tells the reader that he is clearly an influential person in hip hop, therefore influencing them to read further into the story.  I think the overall appearance of the text on this spread is effective and professional, with the bold drop capital breaking up the text and the way it is set out neatly in three columns making it look more appealing to read.
The simple and bold title is an aspect which looks professional and eye catching; the way it contrasts with the background really draws the reader in to read the story. I intend to use this and a drop capital to make my double page spread look intriguing to potential readers. I have also planned to use 3 columns for my article as I think it is enough to make the text look nicely broken up.

As you read the text itself, Birdman doesn’t always talk about his own music career, but talks about those involved in Young Money as well. It shows the reader that he must be a dominant and knowledgeable character in this industry as he has been capable of creating such a successful crew. Readers are able to get an idea of his way of talking by the use of swearwords, slang and even lack of grammar as he says, ‘They on a mission’ rather than saying ‘They’re’.
The idea of mentioning other artists is an aspect which I am considering including in my article. I feel with that people may feel more influenced to read the story as they may be interested in hearing about other artists as well.
